Monroe County Archives
The Monroe County, Tennessee Archives serves the public by providing access to public holdings and records. Genealogists benefit from our resources significantly. Court records provide important information when proving family history and ancestry. They are considered primary sources and are the best foundation for genealogy information. These records can provide family relationships, places of residence, occupations, and other family history information. Sometimes copies of original records are needed in order to become a member of certain societies, such as Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
The Monroe County Archives website includes indexes to the court records. The indexes are not complete, however we are continuously updating them. The Monroe County Courthouse has suffered two fires – one in 1832 and the other between 1864 and 1865. Because of this, some records, especially marriages, deeds, and County Court records may not be available.
Completed in 1897, the Monroe County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its Romanesque, Classical Revival, and Italianate Architecture. The Archives are located in the basement of the courthouse.
In every conceivable manner, the family is a link to our past, bridge to our future.
Family faces are magic mirrors. Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present and future.
People will not look forward to posterity who never look backward to their ancestors.
